DW90 Celebration Event – Results Report
Some of the Past Captain’s Team Captains and our guest for the day
Dun Whinny marked its 90th anniversary in fitting style on Saturday, with a strong field assembling at the ever-immaculate Gleneagles King’s Course for the DW90 Past Captains Texas Scramble.
A brief fog delay meant proceedings got underway slightly later than planned, but once play began the conditions improved markedly, with the King’s eventually bathed in sunshine and providing a superb setting for the day’s celebrations.
With a full tee sheet rolling from early morning, the draw itself reflected the depth and history of the club. Familiar names from across the decades were paired in fourballs that blended experience, competitiveness, and no shortage of storytelling potential. Alongside the home contingent, the presence of invited guests added to the sense of occasion and was warmly received throughout the day.
From the opening group of Michael Collier, Eric Lambert, Scott Williamson and David McColgan, through to the later starters, the tone was set for a day that balanced camaraderie with a keen competitive edge.
Conditions on the King’s offered the opportunity for low scoring but still demanded precision on approach and discipline on the famously contoured greens. As expected in a Texas Scramble format, early momentum proved crucial, with teams looking to take advantage of the par fives and avoid costly errors.
It quickly became clear that one team had found an exceptional rhythm.
David Watt, Craig Scott, Ewan Kinnear and C J Miquel combined superbly to produce a standout net score of 50.14, a return that set the benchmark and ultimately proved untouchable. Their performance was characterised by consistency across the card and a clinical use of the format, with each player contributing at key moments.
Among the early starters, Eric Lambert, Scott Williamson, David McColgan and Michael Collier (Past Captain 2015–17) set an impressive clubhouse target with 53.07, a mark that held up strongly as the field progressed. Close behind, Allister Wallace, Mark Nicolson, David Lymburn and Gordon Colborn posted 53.75, rounding off a tightly contested top three.
Further down the leaderboard, Tariq Ali, Ross MacNish, Andy Lothian (Past Captain 2017–19) and Patrick Elsmie returned 53.78, narrowly missing out on a podium finish, while the team of Kevin Beattie, Alastair Cantlay, Sandy Grant and Michael Cantlay posted 54.02 in another solid showing.
Notably, C J Miquel’s contribution to the winning side added an extra layer of significance to the result, given his own tenure as Past Captain (2001–02), underlining the strong representation of former captains throughout the field.
The remainder of the field reflected the competitive nature of the day, with scoring tightly bunched and only small margins separating many of the teams.

Individual Prizes
There was also keen competition for the individual honours, although it quickly became apparent that having “David” on the card was something of a prerequisite for success on the day.
Longest Drive (10th): David McColgan
Nearest the Pin (5th): David Paterson
Straightest Drive (1st): David Roxburgh (Past Captain 1995–96)
Nearest the Pin with a Hickory Club (16th): David Lymburn
A clean sweep for the Davids, and for the rest of the field, it was very much a case of competing for second place unless your name happened to match.
David Paterson and David McColgan are asked to get in touch to arrange collection of their prizes.

Lifetime Membership Award – Richard Hally
The DW90 celebrations also provided a fitting moment to recognise one of Dun Whinny’s most dedicated members, with Richard Hally awarded Lifetime Membership of the club.
Richard played a key role in the planning of the day, taking particular pleasure in reconnecting with past captains, former members and guests to ensure the occasion reflected the history and spirit of Dun Whinny. That effort was clear to see in both the strength of the field and the atmosphere throughout the day.
His contribution to the club, however, spans far beyond this event. From his time as Captain to his work as Handicap Secretary, Richard has given generously of his time and energy over many years for the benefit of others. Just as importantly, his family’s connection to Dun Whinny, stretching across three generations from the club’s very foundation, represents a unique and valued part of its history.
It was therefore both fitting and a privilege, in this 90th anniversary year, to recognise that commitment with the award of Lifetime Membership. Richard also assisted with the presentation of prizes on the day, rounding off an occasion in which his influence was felt throughout.
