Dun Whinny vs Bruntfield LGS
As we head towards the end of our season of club matches, Sunday 14 September saw us hosting Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society.
After a tied match last year, everybody was excited about the prospect of another hard-fought battle as well as being rather concerned about the forecast downpour expected later in the afternoon. As it turned out both events were as predicted!
As normal matches were spilt between the Kings and Queens courses. Conditions were a little damp underfoot, overcast skies with almost no wind and an experienced Dun Whinny squad was assembled and ready to go.
Appointed as Captain for the day, Neil Lock had been celebrating his place in the team in the style of Tyrell Hatton after making the Ryder Cup team a couple of weeks ago although thankfully not to quite the same extent. His drive on the first had the look of a man who had commenced his warm-up around 1:30am that morning. The sight of Paul Kelly in shorts and sunglasses was exactly the sobering effect required however and soon all the matches were under way.
The Matches
Match 1 - Neil Lock & Paul Kelly played out an honourable halved match to continue the trend of tight matches in this event. Bruntsfield captain Richard Philips had to sadly come off the course due to injury after 14 holes when up in the match leaving his partner to hold on valiantly to secure the half point.
Match 2 – David McColgan and Kevin Beattie started strongly but were eventually overhauled by their opponents 2&1. Schoolboy error clearly was to allow both opponents to remain fit and healthy and able to complete all 18 holes.
Match 3 – Daley Smith & Iain Aitchison put in another high quality performance (the likes of which we have come to expect – I was told to write that bit!) and won comfortably 3&2.
Match 4 – Mike Cantlay and Ken Swa contested an excellent match where the scoring might well have been the best of the day. With birdies flying in from both sides and long putts falling on a regular basis the game was eventually halved which sounded a fitting result overall.
Match 5 – Keith Stirling & Jonathan Fletcher played in yet another very tight game with never much in it. JF held his nerve down 18 to win the final hole and the match 1 up
Match 6 – Aidan O’Carroll and Ian Fisher won 2&1 in a match which I have been informed was again full of high quality golf. Good to see Aidan found a better partner this year!
Final Score
Dun Whinny 4 Bruntsfield Links 2
Another very close match with every game going to at least the 16th hole. As always games were played in great spirit and for the most part everybody finished without getting too wet. We were able to watch with relief as the heavens opened shortly after and both courses were under water by the time we left for home. We look forward to the re-match next season at Bruntsfield.
