Trophy History: The George McKelvie Trophy

First awarded in 2005, the George McKelvie Trophy commemorates George McKelvie—an accomplished Consultant Surgeon and Dun Whinny member for over 30 years. George served on Council and was Club Captain from 1987 to 1989. A keen golfer and fierce competitor who occasionally railed against the Rules of Golf, he was widely liked and respected across the membership.

During his captaincy, George took the role seriously and helped modernise club governance—most notably by encouraging routine, cyclical change on Council, with members standing down after two years to broaden participation across the club.

George’s passing is recorded in the 2005 AGM minutes, together with his bequest to fund a trophy for a Better Ball stroke play competition over the Queen’s Course from the front tees, with pairings to be drawn among members wishing to play. The bequest commissioned a beautiful, bespoke silver trophy: a modern, bowl-shaped piece mounted on a circular timber plinth with a silver band, designed by noted Dunblane silversmith Graham Stewart.

We look forward to honouring George’s legacy this weekend and to a great day’s competition on the Queen’s.
