Dun Whinny vs Blairgowrie

Ken McKenzie Salver, 31 August 2025

Neil Wilkie and Daley Smith with the Ken McKenzie Salver

The annual match for the Ken McKenzie Salver was played on Sunday 31st August at Blairgowrie Golf Club, staged over their famous Rosemount Course.

Thankfully, the weather was kinder than the day before, when some of our members endured torrential rain at Dundonald. This time, only a few passing showers interrupted play, making for a much more enjoyable contest.

The Salver was donated by Kirsty McKenzie in memory of her late husband Ken, who was a much-loved member of both Blairgowrie and Dun Whinny. Each year the trophy is keenly contested, with recent Dun Whinny captain Aidan O’Carrol leading the side to victories in the last two editions. Unfortunately, injury forced Aidan to miss this year’s match, leaving me to step in as captain on the day… no pressure then!

The Matches

  • Match 1 – Daley Smith & Neil Lock secured a 2&1 victory to get Dun Whinny off to the perfect start.

  • Match 2 – Mike Cantlay & David Bowles fought hard but were edged out 2&1, bringing the tie back level.

  • Match 3 – Keith Stirling & Alan Black produced a strong performance to win 3&2.

  • Match 4 – Tariq Ali & David Watt battled to an honourable half against tough opposition.

  • Match 5 – With Tony Moran unavailable, Jonathan Fletcher stepped in alongside Gordon Colborn, and the pair delivered a fine 2&1 win.

  • Match 6 – Kevin Beattie & Iain Aitchison also finished all square in a tight encounter.

Result

With three wins, two halved matches and one defeat, Dun Whinny secured a 4–2 victory overall, retaining the Ken McKenzie Salver. This result extends our historic record in the fixture to 13 wins and 5 losses since the Salver was first played for.

Closing Thoughts

We were treated to a superb high tea after the match, which left many of us fighting off food comas before the journey home! A big thank you to everyone at Blairgowrie GC, who were once again fantastic hosts and ensured the day was played in the very best spirit. We now look forward to welcoming Blairgowrie to Gleneagles in 2026 for the next instalment of this special fixture.
