🏌️ Stroke Play Championship – Final Round Report
Gleneagles King’s Course – Saturday 6 September 2025
The King’s Course was unforgiving in the final round of the Stroke Play Championship – narrow fairways, tricky pin positions, and enough bunkers to keep the green staff in overtime. But when the dust settled, one man stood tallest. Or perhaps two men in one, given he’s just claimed both major trophies.
Yes, Alastair Cantlay is not only your 2025 Gross Champion but also your 2025 Net Champion – the kind of double that makes the rest of the field wonder if he’s secretly cloned himself.
🥇 Saturday Medal Results
Gross Medal: Once again, the familiar name at the top — Alastair Cantlay, with a steady 76. His iron play was as precise as his fillings must be shiny. Another medal for the man who’s making it a habit. Only two other beat 80, Aitchison and Higham.
Net Medal: The day belonged, however, to Billy Z McNeill, posting a scintillating 65 net that left competitors shaking their heads. Iain Aitchison fought valiantly with a 67 net, but McNeill’s score was too good. Honourable mentions to Mr Crockart (67) and Mr Wallace (69).
🏆 Gross Championship – Stroke Play Gross Trophy
This was never truly in doubt.
After rounds of 78, 73, and 76, Alastair Cantlay signed off with a total of 227, leaving his closest challengers eating divots somewhere in the distance.
The Gross Trophy now has a new name etched onto it — and quite possibly twice the engraving bill, given how he managed the Net too.
➡️ Winner: Alastair Cantlay – Gross Champion 2025
Cue whispers in the clubhouse: is it even worth showing up next year if this man is in the draw?
🏆 Net Championship – Stroke Play Net Trophy
The other great prize of the Championship — and once again, the tally reads the same: Alastair Cantlay.
His consistency over all three venues carried him home, overcoming early leader Andy Lothian.
Net golf is supposed to “level the playing field” — unless of course you’re Cantlay, in which case it just becomes another stage to win on.
➡️ Winner: Alastair Cantlay – Net Champion 2025
Yes, you read that correctly. He won both. Hands up if you’re tired of hearing his name. (Everyone’s hands go up, apart from Cantlay’s, which are busy holding trophies.)
🏌️ Honourable Mentions
Billy Z McNeill – Saturday’s Net Medallist, proving he can turn it on when the lights are brightest.
Iain Aitchison – another nearly-man performance, with Saturday’s fine 77 gross/67 net just not quite enough to break through.
📝 Correspondent’s Reflection
This was not just a victory – it was a statement.
2025 will go down as The Year of Cantlay, where one man took home both the Gross and Net Championships, and just to rub it in, pocketed the Saturday Gross Medal for dessert.
The Stroke Play Trophy, first awarded in 1984, has seen its share of drama – but seldom has it seen such dominance. Cantlay didn’t just win; he planted a flag in the middle of the fairway and declared: “This is mine now.”
🏆 Final Roll of Honour

If this were boxing, the ring announcer would be screaming:
