Queens Awaits: Stableford Saturday at Gleneagles

With the Autumn medals barely engraved and tales of path‑shots and worms still doing the rounds, Dun Whinny heads over to the Queen’s Course this Saturday for a Stableford dash. Queens, shorter than King’s but no pushover, rewards guile, accurate driving, and deft touch into its mischievous little greens. The draw promises entertainment, and perhaps another story or two for the clubhouse bar.

At 8:10, David McColgan is back on stage, paired with Tariq Ali and Iain Atchison. McColgan showed both brilliance and heartbreak last week: nine holes of perfection, then one lost ball to undo his round. In Stableford, consistency counts less than bursts of brilliance, making him dangerous if he can ride the front‑nine form. Colin Campbell (8:20) is another to watch—his reliable ball‑striking travels well, and his placing in the gross medals shows he’ll rarely bleed Stableford points. Ken Marshall (8:40), the season’s iron man across all three majors, will fancy his chances to keep piling on points with his gritty style. Later, Mark Nicolson (9:20) returns; his blend of flair (and evident compassion for wildlife) could translate nicely to Queen’s, where imagination is rewarded. And then there’s Billy Z McNeill at 8:20—if he can buy the coffees again, perhaps he’ll slip a few three‑pointers onto his scorecard as well.

So who lifts Saturday’s spoils? McColgan has the firepower, Campbell the steadiness, Marshall the pedigree—yet Stableford has a knack for favouring the opportunists. One streak of pars and a rogue birdie can tilt everything. As always on Queens, don’t bet against an unexpected name sweeping up, late in the morning draw.
