The 2025 Club Championship Final
Al Cantlay & David Logie, about to tee off on the 1st hole.
Sunday 22nd June saw an eagerly awaited final between two of Dun Whinny’s finest — David Logie and Al Cantlay — competing for the honour of being crowned Club Champion 2025 on the King’s Course.
For Al, this marked his first ever final, a significant milestone in his journey from junior golfer to one of the club’s most naturally gifted players. Standing in his way was the seasoned and decorated David Logie — a former Club Champion and perennial contender in Dun Whinny’s major events.
The match got off to a solid start, with both players carding comfortable pars on the opening hole.
At the second, Al capitalised on a booming drive, setting up a birdie opportunity. He converted it neatly, edging ahead after David settled for par. That one-hole advantage held through the third.
David hitting his second shot into the 2nd hole, after a great drive, however Al’s drive is almost on the green (you may need to zoom in to see Al’s ball).
The fourth hole proved more chaotic. Both players found trouble on the right, and after a series of momentum swings, it was David who walked away with the win, Al narrowly missing an 8–10 foot putt to save the hole. Back to all square.
The fifth was a moment of magic from Logie. After missing the green left and leaving himself in a treacherous position on the hill, David produced a sublime recovery that rattled the pin and left him with a tap-in par. Al faced a challenging two-putt from the back of the green across “rollercoaster” slopes, and while he handled the pressure well, a 5-foot tester was needed just to tie the hole — which he made.
On the par-5 sixth, David reached the green in two, but Al responded brilliantly from the greenside bunker, stiffing a superb third shot and holing the 5-footer for birdie. David had already coolly rolled his long eagle putt to inside a couple of feet, and both walked off with birdies
Both players tee off on the 6th and would eventually make birdies.
.
At the seventh, David found the bunker with his approach while Al positioned himself pin-high, just off the fringe. Though David escaped the sand well, he couldn’t save par, and conceded the hole to give Al the lead once more.
The momentum shifted again at the eighth, where David’s steady par levelled the match, only for a bogey at nine to hand the lead straight back to Al at the halfway mark.
The tenth and eleventh holes were shared in pars as Al maintained his narrow lead. But the tide turned decisively on the 12th and 13th. David, consistent and clinical, kept his par streak alive while Al faltered with back-to-back bogeys — handing Logie the lead for the first time.
Hole 14 saw both players make par. On the 15th, David's unwavering form continued with yet another par, while Al left himself an 8-footer on the undulating green. It slipped past the edge — David now 2 up with three to play.
The 16th saw two brilliant tee shots and shared pars, but with only two holes remaining, Al found himself in a dormie two situation.
On the 17th, both players unleashed strong drives but weren’t pleased with their approach shots. David found the fringe on the left, leaving a lightning-fast downhill putt, while Al missed the green to the right. Al’s recovery chip gave him a chance at par, but David judged the pace of his slippery putt to perfection, nestling it to within a few feet. With the match all but sealed, Al graciously walked over and conceded the match.
It was a final played in true Dun Whinny spirit — filled with quality golf, sportsmanship, and drama. Al Cantlay showcased his tremendous talent and heart, but it was David Logie’s unshakable composure and bogey-free back nine that made the difference.
Congratulations to David Logie — your 2025 Dun Whinny Club Champion.
