One Last Tilt at the King’s: Dun Whinny’s Season Finale
One more Saturday, one more scorecard, and one final opportunity to turn “I’ve been playing quite well lately” into something the leaderboard can substantiate. Dun Whinny’s competitive season concludes this weekend with a multi-tee Stableford over the King’s Course, and the revised draw promises an entertaining final chapter.
Before starting your round, please ensure you select the correct tee for the tees you will actually play. There will be ample opportunity for golfing errors over the next eighteen holes; let’s avoid an administrative one before the opening drive.
The Draw: Early Birds and Late Contenders
8:30 am — Scott Williamson, Eric Lambert & Michael Page
The opening three-ball has the honour of setting the clubhouse target. Page’s recent net 68 in the Medal Finals offers encouraging evidence of form, while Williamson and Lambert have one last chance to make this the Saturday everyone remembers.
8:40 am — Jonathan Dickson, Tom MacKenzie & Billy Z McNeill
It is especially heartening to see Dr Jonny Dickson on the draw, joining Tom MacKenzie and Billy Z for the season’s farewell. Billy will surely be hoping for a less eventful opening hole than his Medal Finals nine. A quiet start, for once, would make perfectly acceptable copy.
8:50 am — Crawford Gray, Kevin Dickson & Douglas Hamilton
Crawford’s recent 36 points on the Queen’s suggest he could feature prominently if that scoring touch travels across the estate. Kevin Dickson and Douglas Hamilton complete an intriguing group—with Kevin hopefully restricting this week’s athletic activity to swinging a golf club rather than vaulting over his trolley.
9:00 am — Ken Marshall, David McLeod & Kevin Brannan
Double seasonal champion Ken Marshall remains an obvious contender, but David McLeod brings strong recent results of his own, including second place with Colin Campbell in the McKelvie Trophy. Kevin Brannan joins a group with every incentive to keep the points accumulating.
9:10 am — David McColgan, Michael Cantlay & Rob Simpson
There is plenty to interest the form-watchers here. Rob Simpson’s net 64 in the Medal Finals demonstrated exactly what he can produce on the King’s. Alongside David McColgan and Vice Captain Michael Cantlay, he will be looking to finish the season with another persuasive performance.
9:20 am — Sandy Grant, Paul Lewis & Jonathan Fletcher
Sandy returns to individual competition after taking third alongside Bill Sexton in the McKelvie Trophy. Paul Lewis and Jonathan Fletcher complete a three-ball that could quietly assemble a threatening total while attention is focused elsewhere.
9:30 am — Alastair Cantlay, David Watt & Tony Stewart
Alastair’s gross 77 in the Medal Finals provides a useful reminder of his capabilities over this course. With David Watt and Tony Stewart alongside, this group has its own opportunity to leave a final mark on the season.
9:40 am — David Logie, Rob Crockart & Patrick Elsmie
Recent trophy winners David Logie and Rob Crockart share the tee with Patrick Elsmie. Logie claimed the Medal Finals gross honours with 74, while Crockart helped produce last weekend’s outstanding better-ball net 60. This time, however, Rob must account for every hole himself—David Bruce cannot be summoned when assistance is required.
9:50 am — Allister Wallace, Tariq Ali & Mark Higham
Bringing the field home, Allister Wallace and Mark Higham provide this correspondent with both excellent company and a demanding standard to follow. Allister’s Darroch-winning 40 points and Mark’s Autumn Meeting 77 speak for themselves. My own ambition is more modest: contribute enough respectable golf to avoid becoming the principal anecdote.
A Fitting Farewell
After a season of fine victories, improbable recoveries and occasional excursions into places James Braid surely never intended us to visit, Saturday offers one last chance to enjoy the competition and company that make Dun Whinny special.
Play well, enjoy the finale—and make sure your selected tee matches the one beneath your feet.
