Presidents Platter. Round 2. Queen’s. Yellow Tee. Wed 8th July
The stage is set for a dramatic conclusion to one of Dun Whinny’s most historic events as the President’s Platter moves to the Queen’s Course this Wednesday for the second and final round.
Following a testing opening round over the King's back in June, we now have a clear look at the leaderboard. While the King's asked for power and survival, the Queen’s—played from the yellow tees—will demand precision, nerve, and a delicate touch on the greens. With aggregate net scoring deciding the winner, every three-putt avoided and every steady par saved could be the difference between lifting the silver platter or finishing as a "nearly man."
The Standing After Round 1
Leading the way after a brilliant opening performance is Ken Marshall, who sits at the top of the pile with a superb net 67. Ken has been in formidable form all season, and he has set a formidable pace that the rest of the field will have to hunt down.
However, he is certainly not home and dry yet. Chasing him close behind are David Paterson and Robert McCleary, both sitting on tidy net 70s. A three-shot lead can vanish in the blink of an eye on the Queen’s, especially if the gorse comes into play.
The chasing pack is tightly bunched, with a trio of consistent performers—Rob Simpson, Billy Z McNeill, and Paul Wadsworth—all lurking just a shot further back on net 71. Even Mark Higham, also on 71, will feel he is well within striking distance if he can replicate the form that saw him nearly claim the Hally Prize last weekend.
A Test of Heritage and Nerve
As we move into the deciding round, it is worth remembering the heritage of this trophy. Presented in 1978 by our founding Captain and first Honorary President, J.C. Dougall, the President’s Platter was designed to reward the golfer who could master both of Gleneagles' classic layouts.
The Queen’s may be shorter, but it is notoriously cunning. For the leaders, the challenge will be managing the pressure; for the chasers, the goal is to post a low number early and see if the nerves at the top begin to fray.
With the leaderboard so congested from 2nd to 7th place, we expect plenty of movement as the scores filter in on Wednesday evening.
