Match Report - DWGC vs Seniors Golfers’ Society. 8th May

The first club match of the season was played against the Senior Golfers’ Society on Thursday 8th May.

DWGC again fielded an experienced team, determined to avenge a 4 v 2 defeat at Luffness GC last year.

The pre-match hospitality in the Dormy was excellent and the slightly delayed tee time meant that conversation (and wine) flowed freely. Eric Lambert met a fellow Actuary which made his day!

All of the matches were played on the Kings - the course was in first class condition and scoring was generally very good.

Frank Johnson and David Bowles led us out and had an entertaining match against Jim Patrick and Robin Duncan. The outcome was a 2&1 win for the DWGC team.

Next up were Ken Marshall and Paul Lewis who played Steve Williamson and Angus Farquar. This was a tight affair which went down to the wire, with Ken and Paul prevailing 1 up.

The third match saw Ross MacNish and Gordon Colburn taking on James Mackie and Mark Howard. After a match which ebbed and flowed and also went down the last, the spoils were shared.

The fourth match saw Mike Cantlay and Craig Scott take on Alastair Lochhead and Richard Fenton. This was slightly more straightforward for the home team, who dovetailed well to win 3&2.

The penultimate match saw Tariq Ali and Eric Lambert take on Andrew McInroy and Chris Underwood. The DWCG pair were both on form and ran out very comfortable 5&3 winners.

The final match saw Andy Lothian and David Mitchell (Team Captain) take on Johnny Allbrook and Richard Muckart (Team Captain). The home team got off to a fast start in this one and were 3up at the turn. Johnny and Richard then had an eagle and two birdies to peg it back and David had to hole a knee knocker of a six footer on the last green to half the match.

The final score was therefore 5 v 1 to DWGC, home advantage once again proved to be crucial in this fixture.

All of the matches were played in fantastic spirit as usual and it great to host the SGS in our 90th anniversary year.

We very much look forward to meeting up again in 2027.

David Mitchell
