Match Report - Dun Whinny vs Gleneagles Professionals
Wednesday 20th May
On a glorious May evening, six lucky DW participants gathered around the King’s first tee to take on the very best that Gleneagles could offer.
The team matches were as follows:
Tee 1: Ken Marshall/Keith Stirling versus Matthew Reid/Fraser Hughes
Tee 2: Rob Simpson/Frank Johnson versus Andrew Owens/Josh Dunbar
Tee 3: Stewart Miller/Dave Cuthbert versus Alex Chalk/Joel Thomson
Whilst it was a superbly dry evening, there was a fair breeze in the regular direction - tricky on the outward nine.
The first group were full of confidence, having taken an early lead and then held on through the turn. Despite a terrific fightback from the masters, we shook hands on the 17th: 2 & 1.
In contrast, despite a good start, Frank and Rob were 2 down at the turn but valiantly won holes at 10, 13 and 15. One up standing on the 18th tee, a tricky five-footer from Rob halved the hole and won the game: 1 up.
In the final match, some incredible dovetailing by the DW lads meant they were never down in the match and secured victory on the 16th: 3 & 2.
A victory, let alone a clean sweep, has been a rarity in this fixture in recent years but, in all honesty, the game of golf was the real winner.
At the 18th, Chalky managed to get to four feet with driver and 7-iron (for a round of four under). Mefinx we used our (many) shots wisely.......
A wonderful match full of camaraderie, followed by some good stories on the balcony of A70 afterwards.
