Gordon Lockhart 36 Hole “Iron Man” Challenge. Saturday 8th August. King’s/Queen’s.
This week marks our much-anticipated 36-hole competition for the prestigious Gordon Lockhart Trophy. The event will be played over two of our finest courses, with the morning round taking place on the King’s Course and the afternoon round on the Queen’s Course.
Our Captain has arranged with the Dormy to extend the availability of breakfast rolls beyond the usual 11:30am cut-off for those playing both rounds. If previous years are anything to go by, you’ll need a bit of luck to snag a roll—pizza might even become the backup plan!
There are still plenty of spaces available for those wishing to play both rounds, but you’re also welcome to join for just the morning or afternoon session. Entry is open via the App until Thursday at 18:00. After that, please contact either myself or Tariq directly, especially if you have any special tee time requests. The draw will be posted on Thursday evening.
A Bit of History
The Gordon Lockhart Trophy, a beautiful silver rose bowl, was first played for in 1978. The trophy was donated to the Club by the son of Gordon Lockhart, who was the very first professional at Gleneagles. Remarkably, Gordon Lockhart himself won this trophy in competition at Turnberry in 1912, a fact proudly inscribed on the cup. After Gordon Lockhart moved to Australia, the trophy remained among his possessions until his passing, when his son decided it should return to Scotland and be played for at Dun Whinny.
It was agreed that the trophy would be awarded in a 36-hole competition played on a single day (traditionally a Wednesday). Recognising that not all members may wish to play two rounds, entries are also accepted from those who prefer a single round, with a lunch organised between rounds for all participants.
Best of luck to everyone taking part—may the best golfer win!
