Gordon Lockhart 36 Hole “Iron Man” Challenge. Saturday 8th August. King’s/Queen’s.

This week marks our much-anticipated 36-hole competition for the prestigious Gordon Lockhart Trophy. The event will be played over two of our finest courses, with the morning round taking place on the King’s Course and the afternoon round on the Queen’s Course.

Our Captain has arranged with the Dormy to extend the availability of breakfast rolls beyond the usual 11:30am cut-off for those playing both rounds. If previous years are anything to go by, you’ll need a bit of luck to snag a roll—pizza might even become the backup plan!

There are still plenty of spaces available for those wishing to play both rounds, but you’re also welcome to join for just the morning or afternoon session. Entry is open via the App until Thursday at 18:00. After that, please contact either myself or Tariq directly, especially if you have any special tee time requests. The draw will be posted on Thursday evening.

A Bit of History

The Gordon Lockhart Trophy, a beautiful silver rose bowl, was first played for in 1978. The trophy was donated to the Club by the son of Gordon Lockhart, who was the very first professional at Gleneagles. Remarkably, Gordon Lockhart himself won this trophy in competition at Turnberry in 1912, a fact proudly inscribed on the cup. After Gordon Lockhart moved to Australia, the trophy remained among his possessions until his passing, when his son decided it should return to Scotland and be played for at Dun Whinny.

It was agreed that the trophy would be awarded in a 36-hole competition played on a single day (traditionally a Wednesday). Recognising that not all members may wish to play two rounds, entries are also accepted from those who prefer a single round, with a lunch organised between rounds for all participants.

Best of luck to everyone taking part—may the best golfer win!

Gordon Lockhart Trophy Draws: Ones to Watch

The draws are out for this year’s Gordon Lockhart Trophy, with the morning round on the King’s Course and the afternoon on the Queen’s. With a strong field assembled, there’s plenty of anticipation for what promises to be a cracking day of golf.

Potential Winners:

Rob Crockart and Jonathan Dickson, both out early at 7:10am and again at 12:40pm, have been in good form recently and could well be in the mix come the end of the day. Mark Higham, teeing off at 7:20am and 12:50pm, is another steady performer—and fresh from a victory in last weekend’s Summer Meeting alongside Kevin Beattie, he’ll be full of confidence. Kevin Beattie himself, out at 8:00am and 1:30pm, is also riding high after that win and will be looking to carry his momentum into this competition.

One to Watch:

Ken Marshall, also in the 7:20am and 12:50pm groups, deserves a special mention. Thanks to the sheer amount of golf he plays, two rounds in a single day is nothing out of the ordinary for him. His consistent form and stamina could give him a real edge as the competition wears on.

Outside Bets:

Daley Smith, in the 7:40am and 1:10pm slots, is more than capable of stringing together a couple of strong rounds and causing an upset. Eric Lambert, playing at 7:50am and 1:20pm, is another who could surprise the field if he gets off to a good start.

With a great mix of experience and fresh faces, it’s all to play for. Best of luck to everyone taking part—here’s to a fantastic day’s golf!
