The Brass Eagle Beckons: Captain’s Prize Draw Revealed for the Queen’s
The stage is set for one of the most storied and fiercely contested fixtures in the Dun Whinny calendar: the Captain’s Prize, contested this Saturday, 12 September 2026, over the glorious turf of Gleneagles’ Queen’s Course from the yellow tees.
First contested back in 1949, the competition carries with it generations of triumph, heartbreaking three-putts, and the ultimate prize: custody of the legendary Brass Eagle.
The Absent Champion
There is, however, a notable and sombre absence hanging over the first tee this year. Defending champion Dr Jonathan "Jonny" Dickson, who produced that unforgettable display of "bouncebackability" last year to claim the Eagle with 38 points, will unfortunately be unable to defend his crown as he continues his recovery from a medical episode suffered at the weekend. The entire Dun Whinny membership sends Jonny our warmest thoughts, highest spirits, and best wishes for a swift and full recovery. The bar retellings of your closing three-putt on 18 from twelve months ago will be kept warm until your return, Doctor.
The 2026 Draw: Intrigue in Every Group
With the champion sidelined, the field of challengers is circling like eagles over Strathallan.
7:30 AM — The Early Pathfinders: A lean two-ball to open proceedings, as Michael Collier and Eric Lambert set out to establish an early clubhouse target with no distractions.
7:40 AM — The Nearly Man Returns: All eyes will be on Billy Z McNeill, partnered with Thomas McCulloch and Tony Stewart. Having seen his Strokeplay bid famously unravel with a 10 on the King's 8th last week, Billy Z will be desperate to banish the "close but no cigar" moniker and finally get his hands on the silverware.
7:50 AM — Steady Hands: Kevin Dickson, Michael Page, and Scott Williamson make up a group short on fireworks so far this season but not to be discounted when Stableford points are up for grabs.
8:00 AM — Danger in the Ranks: Rob Crockart, Alan Black, and Bill Sexton. Last year, Sexton stood on the 18th tee with 36 points in his pocket, only to deposit yet another Fulham FC branded ball into the Perthshire wilderness. Local ball-spotters are advised to wear helmets.
8:10 AM — The Mathematician & The Power: Paul Kelly, Ken Marshall, and Tom MacKenzie. Fresh from calculating every conceivable permutation in the smoke area last Saturday—and lamenting triple bogeys with his new 4-wood—Ken Marshall's recent ball-striking form makes him an undeniable heavyweight in this field.
8:20 AM — Redemption & Shaving Talk: David McLeod, Crawford Gray, and Douglas Hamilton. Hamilton will be eager to banish the ghosts of his humbling 2025 defence, while Crawford Gray will hopefully have consulted Gillette prior to tee-off to ensure facial comfort over the closing stretch.
8:30 AM — The Long-Game Threat: Aidan O’Carroll, Allister Wallace, and Sandy Grant.
8:40 AM — The Captain Steps Up: Paul Lewis, Robert McLeary, and Club Captain Daley Smith. It is customary for the Captain’s group to attract a gallery, though Daley will be hoping to let his golf do the talking rather than merely dishing out the prizes at dusk.
8:50 AM — The Vice Captain’s Pursuit: David Bruce, Jonathan Fletcher, and Vice Captain Michael Cantlay, riding high off a superb runner-up 37 points in last weekend's Stableford.
9:00 AM — The Form Horses: David Watt, Iain Aitchison, and Keith Stirling. Stirling's blistering back nines are well documented; give him a sniff of the Brass Eagle and he will ignite the afterburners.
9:10 AM — The Heavy Artillery: Mark Nicolson, this golf correspondent (Tariq Ali), and young Bailey Law. Having just carded the best gross round of 82 on the King's, Nicolson's game is purring, while young Law's booming drives will keep everyone on their toes.
9:20 AM — The Anchor Leg: Stuart Wallace, David Mitchell, and Kevin Beattie. Beattie pushed the top of the board last year with 35 points, avoiding his infamous tee shot dispersion records in the process; anchor groups have a habit of stealing the headlines.
