Capital Drama: Dun Whinny Edged Out at Historic Bruntsfield
Stepping onto the sacred turf of Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society is always an exercise in reverence. As the fourth oldest golfing body in the world, tracing its pedigree back to 1761, the Edinburgh layout bears the indelible architectural fingerprints of the game's greatest visionaries: Dr Alister MacKenzie, James Braid, and Fred Hawtree. On Sunday 20th September, Dun Whinny made the journey to the capital for our rescheduled annual inter-club fixture, greeted by mild, blustery skies and, mercifully, not a single drop of the drenching rain that had battered the King’s Course twenty-four hours earlier.
Following a truly sumptuous lunch hosted in Bruntsfield’s grand clubhouse, the contest commenced in the finest traditions of match play.
Leading from the front, Match Captain Aidan O'Carroll wasted no time setting the tone. Stepping up to the 1st tee, Aidan split the fairway with a majestic opening drive that instantly settled the away camp's nerves. Partnered with the reliable Jonathan Fletcher, the skipper marshalled his pairing with tactical authority, closing out Alan Prentice and David Paterson to lodge the first point of the afternoon on the scoreboard for Dun Whinny.
The hosts were quick to retaliate. In Match 2, David Watt and Paul Kelly found themselves up against an inspired home partnership in David Hendry and David Flint. Despite battling stoutly through the blustery crosswinds, Watt and Kelly were unable to convert enough key putts, allowing Bruntsfield to square the overall contest at 1–1.
Dun Whinny’s response in Match 3 was clinical. Low-handicap stalwart Ross MacNish joined forces with Steven Yule, and the pair delivered an exhibition of disciplined, high-calibre fourball golf to dispatch Simon Goldsmith and Walter Hackland, restoring the visitors’ lead at 2–1.
Match 4 saw this correspondent (Tariq Ali) take to the links alongside past club champion David Logie, facing Thomas Didelot and Paul Arnold. Riding high on the momentum of Saturday’s heroic 65-foot bomb on the King’s 8th, this correspondent struck early with a delightful birdie on the 5th hole. Alas, despite that flash of brilliance and Logie's laser-straight ball-striking, the local knowledge of the Bruntsfield duo around MacKenzie's undulating putting surfaces proved decisive, tipping the match to the hosts and leveling the fixture at 2–2.
With everything resting on a knife-edge, Captain Aidan cast an expectant eye back down the fairways, confident that his heavy artillery anchored in the final two pairings would deliver the goods.
It was not to be. Match 5 featured our plus-handicap powerhouse David McColgan (+0.9) alongside Rob Simpson, taking on Duncan McLeod and Euan Parker. Despite plenty of booming drives and greens in regulation, the home side produced stubborn resistance and clutch up-and-downs to claim the point. That left our final pairing of Kevin Beattie and Iain Aitchison fighting for an overall halved match against David Pellow and Richard Dewar. The Bruntsfield pair held their nerve superbly down the closing stretch, extinguishing the Dun Whinny comeback and sealing a 4–2 victory for the hosts.
While the result favored the capital side, the afternoon was an absolute triumph of camaraderie, sportsmanship, and classic match-play golf.
